MDM trade plate driver makes a collection from Aberystwyth and brings back a magnet.

We were once again delighted this week when a trade plate driver brought us back a fridge magnet, after collecting a vehicle from the seaside and university town of Aberystwyth. So, we popped it on the fridge next to last week’s magnet at the MDM Vehicle Deliveries headquarters.

Aberystwyth, the biggest town in Ceredigion on the west coast of Wales, is a university and seaside town.

The remains of Aberystwyth Castle sit between two beaches at the highest point of the town. Owain Glyndwr inhabited the castle between 1404 & 1405 who gave up the castle up to Prince Harry who was later Kind Henry V of England.

Restored by Charles I, it then became home to the royal mint between 1639 to1642, where silver pennies were made from local silver mines. Shortly after the coin making, the castle was razed by parliamentarian troops, only three towers still exist.

Aberystwyth Castle Remains.

Once the Railway lines started opening in the 1860’s the town had a tourist boom, on Good Friday in 1869 both the Cambrian line opened and the Royal Pier, which had just been built, attracting seven thousand visitors. Houses and hotels shortly followed. The castle hotel which was never finished was sold off cheaply to the Welsh National University Committee, which is why Aberystwyth is still a university town today.
