A classic car is rarely just a vehicle. Whether it is a treasured restoration, an auction purchase or a project waiting to be brought back to life, it deserves more care than an everyday runabout. This guide covers what to think about when moving a classic, and how MDM handles them.
Why classics need special handling
Classic and collectible cars present challenges that modern stock does not. Paintwork and trim may be irreplaceable. Mechanicals can be fragile or seized. Many are non-runners or restoration projects that cannot be driven at all. And the value, whether in money or sentiment, makes every mark worth avoiding.
For these reasons, classics are almost always best transported rather than driven, and usually on covered transport.
Covered transport is the natural choice
Our classic car transport service uses careful, considered handling suited to older and valuable vehicles. For most classics we recommend enclosed transport, which seals the car away from weather, road spray and stone chips for the whole journey and keeps it private.
This matters most for:
- Freshly restored or show-condition cars
- Original, unrestored cars with delicate paint and trim
- Rare or high-value vehicles you would rather keep out of view
We have handled the full range, from a 1972 VW Camper to a restored Rover SD1, so older and characterful vehicles are familiar territory.
Non-runners and restoration projects
A classic that does not run, has no current MOT, or is mid-restoration cannot be driven, and to be driven a vehicle must be roadworthy with a current MOT. That is no obstacle: these are transported. We can move:
- Seized or non-starting cars
- Part-completed restorations
- Barn finds and projects on their way to the workshop
Tell us in advance whether the car runs, rolls and steers, so we can plan the right loading approach and equipment.
What to check and prepare before collection
A little preparation helps the move go smoothly:
- Note the condition. Make sure existing marks, dents and scratches are visible, not hidden under dirt where possible.
- Tell us if it runs, rolls, steers and brakes. This decides how we load it.
- Low-clearance cars: let us know about lowered suspension or low front ends so we use the right ramps and angles.
- Secure loose items inside the car and remove valuables and personal belongings.
- Fuel and battery: a small amount of fuel is usually fine; mention if the battery is flat or disconnected.
- Handbrake and locks: tell us if the handbrake is weak, the steering lock sticks, or there are any quirks to releasing the car.
- Keys and access: have keys and any gate or storage access ready for collection.
Documentation: protecting both sides
For a classic, a clear record of condition is essential. Every movement includes a condition report with digital photos at both collection and delivery, plus instant proof of delivery. This documents exactly how the car looked when it left and when it arrived, giving you and us a shared, honest record.
Every classic we move is also fully insured in transit. Combined with a member of the BVRLA and over 35 years of experience since 1990, that gives you a movement you can trust with a valuable car.
Storage and onward care
If your classic is between homes, mid-restoration or waiting for a sale, we can help beyond the journey. We have a secure Leicestershire compound and can also handle preparation work, so the car does not have to go straight from transporter to driveway.
Ready to move your classic?
Every classic is different, so the best starting point is a conversation about the specific car: what it is, whether it runs, where it is going, and how soon. We will recommend the right method and give you one fixed price with everything included.
